Back up Shopify Navigation Menus
1. Create a new Export in the Matrixify
To begin backing up your Shopify navigation menus, open the Matrixify app in your Shopify admin and in the Matrixify Home page locate the Export section and press the “New Export” button.
The app will open a New Export page where you can manage and configure your new Export job.
In the “New Export” page, under the “Select Sheets” dropdown, select to Export the “Menus” sheet.
Open the “Menus” sheet and select to Export all columns and column groups.
2. Configure Export options for regular repeated backups
With the Matrixify app, you can automate your backups to run regularly. However, if you only need a one-time backup, you can skip this step.
To set up automated backups, navigate to the “Options” section on the New Export page and locate the “Scheduling” options.
- Schedule on: Use this option to specify the initial date and time for the Export to run. This first run will serve as the baseline for the repeated schedule. To avoid conflicts with other Matrixify Import/Export jobs, consider scheduling the Export during off-peak hours, such as 1 a.m.
- Repeat every: Set the frequency for the Export to repeat. For backups, we recommend scheduling the job to repeat every 1 day to ensure you always have an up-to-date version of your Shopify navigation menus.
For example, if you set the “Schedule on” option to 1 a.m. and the “Repeat every” option to 1 day, the app will run the first Export at 1 a.m. as scheduled and then repeat it automatically every night at the same time.
To easily find and differentiate your repeated backup Export between other Export and import jobs, it is also suggested to assign a “Custom file name” to your Export.
In the “Custom file name” option you can set any name you would like, for example, “Shopify_Navigation_Backup”.
Other Options do not need to be set or adjusted for this specific task.
3. Start Shopify Menu backup Export job
Once your Export Options are configured, initiate the Export job to back up your Shopify Navigation Menus.
Review the selected options, ensuring all columns for the “Menus” sheet are included. Then, click the “Export” button to start the process. If you have selected the Schedule option then click the “Schedule” button.
The Matrixify app will queue the Export job and begin extracting your Online Store Navigation data. You can monitor the progress directly in the app.
When the Export is finished, a downloadable file containing your Navigation Menu backup will be ready.
Now you have an automated and repeated Export job setup in your Shopify store to back up your Shopify Online Store Navigation Menus.
Restore Shopify Navigation Menus from the backup file
1. Access and download exported Menus backup
To restore your Shopify Navigation Menus, start by downloading the backup file created during the Export process.
Open the Matrixify app in your Shopify admin, and navigate to the “All Jobs” page.
Use the search bar at the top of the page to quickly locate your Export job. Enter the applied custom file name and search for all jobs containing files with such a name.
If you didn’t assign a “Custom file name” option during the Export, don’t worry. Simply click the “Filters” button, apply the “Entity” filter, and set its value to “Menus”. This will display all jobs associated with the Menus entity, making it easy to locate your backup file.
After filtering and identifying the backup Export jobs, find the most recent backup Export job in the list. Click on the file name hyperlink to download the exported file to your device.
After downloading the file, open it to review its contents and verify the data that will be imported and restored.
If you’ve made any updates to the Menu structure within the file, double-check that the formatting and structure remain consistent with the Matrixify Menus sheet template to ensure a smooth restoration process.
2. Import the Shopify Navigation backup file
With the backup file ready, the next step is to Import it into your Shopify store using the Matrixify app.
Open the Matrixify app and navigate to the Import section.
Upload the backup file by either dragging and dropping it into the upload area or clicking the “Add File” button to select the file from your device.
Once uploaded, the app will analyze the file and display the Import job summary.
Review the Import job details to ensure the data matches your expectations, such as the sheet detected as Menus, expected Menu count, and other details.
When you’re ready, click the “Import” button to start the restoration process. The app will queue the Import job and begin importing the menus.
Once the import is complete, verify your navigation menus in the Shopify admin to ensure everything has been restored as intended.
